Barefoot Walking

When the weather gets nicer, our thoughts turn to taking walks outdoors.

As a child growing up, did you walk barefoot in the summer? Here’s all the ways walking with barefeet can benefit you:
  1. Foot Strength and Stability: Walking barefoot allows the muscles, tendons, and ligaments in your feet to engage more fully, leading to enhanced strength and stability. This can help prevent common foot injuries and improve overall balance.
  2. Better Proprioception and Body Awareness:Going barefoot stimulates the nerve endings in the soles of your feet, enhancing proprioception—the body’s awareness of its position in space. This heightened sensory input can improve coordination and athletic performance while reducing the risk of falls.
  3. Natural Arch Support and Alignment:When you’re barefoot, your feet can spread out naturally, promoting better arch support and alignment. This can alleviate issues such as flat feet or collapsed arches, as well as reduce the likelihood of developing foot conditions like plantar fasciitis.
Today try going barefoot for a little while. Try walking on various surfaces. If you are inside maybe feel the difference between a wood floor and carpet. If you are outside, notice the difference in feeling between grass and dirt..
It is no coincidence that we associate walking barefoot with feelings of freedom and joy. If you pay attention a few minutes every day to the luxury of bare feet, you will cultivate these childlike feelings within yourself!
